Network With Us: Henry Yu

Henry Yu is a regional marketing manager for the law firm of Bryan Cave, working in the Santa Monica and Irvine offices. His duties include strategic planning, developing accounts, handling media relations and organizing events that allow lawyers and potential clients to network. Born in Korea, he grew up in the San Francisco area, loves the challenge of golf and has completed four marathons in the past four years. He is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in journalism and public relations, plus a minor in marketing.

While doing an Internet search, he came across the AAJA name and decided to take a closer look. He soon joined.

Q: You’re not a journalist now, so what’s the advantage of becoming a member?
A: Interacting with members of the media is actually one of my job responsbilities and I wanted to broaden my list of contacts and relationships. Plus, as a journalism major in college, I’ve always maintained an interest in the news media.
Q: Because your expertise is marketing, what advice would you have for AAJA-LA in terms of boosting our visibility?
A: Well, it depends on how AAJA-LA wants to portray itself, both short-term and long-term. Is it just an association or does it consider itself to be a “watchdog” on Asian-American issues, mentoring young journalists, assisting individuals with a career change, job placement, etc. Essentially, how does AAJA-LA see itself or how does it want to be seen? Once that question(s)has been answered, you can begin pulling together pieces of the marketing plan.
Q: How are lawyers like journalists, what skills do the two type of individuals share?
A: Communication skills – both written and verbal. While I would never compare journalists and attorneys, effective communication is the fundamental core for both parties. While journalists compose a story, in turn creating something; attorneys have to interpret things and effectively communicate them to their clients.
Q: When you run, you must pace yourself to keep up your energy level. How can that discipline help people juggle a busy schedule and meet deadlines?
A: I think it helps in figuring out what the short-term and long-term priorities are, and how to successfully complete those priorities without waiting to the last minute. Like you said, it’s about pacing yourself, and specific milestones that you set to meet deadline and accommodating a busy work schedule.

WordPress database error Tke AAJA achieve its goal in promoting fair and accurate coverage of Asian Americans?
A: A number of things come to mind. First, providing some insight on any recent trend that either involves or has an Asian-American(s) in a position of influence. Second, keeping the lines of communication open and “knowledge sharing” of hot-button issues and pending impact it may have on Asian-Americans.
