UNITY was in August 2012, but the Los Angeles celebrations officially began at KTLA studios in late  June. About 100 attendees came out for the pre-UNITY mixer, where members from participating groups came together to network and share their stories – all while snacking on freshly-made tacos.

Attending groups included: California Chicano News Media Association (CCNMA), Asian American Journalists Association – Los Angeles Chapter (AAJA-LA), National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) and National Lesbian & Gay Journalist Association (NLGJA).

Board members from each organization spoke about what brought them out that night. The speakers included:

Julio Moran of CCNMA
Barbara Lopez-Nash of KTLA
Jocelyn “Joz” Wang, President of AAJA-LA
Greg Hernandez, President of NLGJA
Robert Hernandez, Co-Chair of Programming for UNITY
Lisa Cox of KTLA and NABJ National Secretary)
Yvette Cabrera, president of CCNMA
Jason Ball, News Director of KTLA
