Student internships: Fall interns sought by Daily News and Register

AAJA-LA is offering two student print internships for the fall term: One with the Los Angeles Daily News, the other with The Orange County Register. Applicant must be an AAJA student member.

The Los Angeles Daily News is seeking talented, ambitious students who want to make a difference. Students can apply for one of the following positions: Metro/community news, online, sports, photography or layout/copy desk.

The 10-week program begins in September and requires an intern to work 12 to 16 hours per week. The successful applicant will be awarded a stipend of up to $1,000 from AAJA-LA. Students must show a demonstrated interest in online and print journalism. Qualified students will be tested, interviewed and selected by Daily News editors and AAJA-LA representatives.

Pay: The successful applicant will be awarded a stipend of up to $1,000 sponsored by AAJA-LA at the end of the internship.

Applicants should include a cover letter and resume detailing what position interests you and why. Include a list of three references. Reporter applicants should submit no more than eight writing samples. Layout/copy desk applicants should submit no more than eight page designs (digital files or hard copies) and/or headline examples. Photography applicants should submit a portfolio (digital preferred) of no more than 10 photos and one photo story. Online applicants can submit live links to past work.

As a Web-first news operation, The Orange County Register is particularly interested in interns with broadcast and Web skills to go with a solid foundation in reporting, writing and news judgment. The student will serve a 150-hour internship, spread over 10 weeks — usually two days a week. The pay is $10.63 an hour.
