AAJA-LA Collegiate Journalism Leadership Program

AAJA-LA is accepting applications for the chapter’s one-year-long Collegiate Journalism Leadership Program. The chapter is looking for the next generation of AAJA-LA leaders.  The program is an opportunity to learn about AAJA, expand your personal knowledge of journalism, build a network of professional and college journalism contacts, and spread everyday working knowledge of the field to your school.

We’re looking for journalism-hungry students committed to a career in the industry and ready to demonstrate leadership and take initiative. The students will also be in charge of AAJA’s main college-geared event of the year, the chapter’s AP Style Mania! Commapalooza Competition, a multi-round quiz format style and spelling competition that will bring together community college and university work wonks from across Southern California in April.

Program points:

  • Each of the four college students will devise and implement a panel (featuring AAJA professionals) or chapter-sponsored college mixer. The event will take place around YOUR university. Refreshments for the mixer or panel will be funded by the chapter. The four chosen candidates will work together to market and promote the event.
  • College students will be expected to attend AAJA-LA quarterly board meetings The four selected students will work together and collaborate to produce the AAJA AP-Style Mania! Commapalooza.
  • Students will receive a $500 to $1,000 stipend (depending on travel distance) to attend an upcoming journalism convention hosted by IRE, ONA, NAB, AAJA, SPJ or other professional journalism organization. They will be partnered with an AAJA guide/ mentor at the convention.
  • The four candidates will be treated to dinner with an AAJA-LA exec of their choice from the field of broadcast, print, or online media, an opportunity to have career-related questions answered.
  • The student will shadow an editor/reporter from the ethnic community of their choice, which will also include a free lunch.

Requirements:

  • Open to SoCal college students only.
  • Must be a student at the university from fall 2011 through the end of spring 2012.
  • Submit a one-page cover letter that clearly identifies a history of journalism commitment, a convention you hope to attend and why you would like to participate, and a past that showcases engagement or study of the Asian American community.
  • Write an idea for a mixer AND panel and discuss how you would execute a successful event.
