Sam Chu Lin AAJA – KTTV FOX 11/KCOP MyNetwork TV Internship

In conjunction with the Asian American Journalists Association Los Angeles Chapter, KTTV FOX 11/KCOP MyNetwork TV will offer an internship in the News department for the Spring 2008 semester.

AAJA-LA is committed to creating opportunities and providing training for students and beginning journalists, allocating thousands of dollars each year to programs such as internships and fellowships.

KTTV FOX 11/KCOP MyNetwork TV believes in promoting a diverse workforce through recruitment efforts and longstanding community involvement. They offer internships to students interested in pursuing a career in the television industry, encouraging hands-on training as well as providing mentoring and feedback.

This internship requires a 12-15 hour commitment per week. Previous intern experience and a related course of study are preferred, but not required. Preference will be given to juniors and seniors, but the selected intern must be a member of AAJA-LA.

In addition to their work at the stations, the chosen intern will also write a story sharing his or her experiences at the end of the internship for the AAJA-LA website, www.aaja-la.org, and will be required to volunteer 15 hours to the local chapter.

The internship receives a $1,000 stipend from the Asian American Journalists Association Los Angeles Chapter. An AAJA-LA member at the stations will act as a mentor for the intern during the internship.

Sam Chu Lin was a pioneering journalist who made it a priority to tell the stories of Asian Americans throughout a distinguished career that spanned five decades. He passed away in March 2006.

 

KNBC Broadcast Internship

AAJA Teams Up with KNBC to select Broadcast Interns for Winter semester.

AAJA Los Angeles will again select one current AAJA member for an internship at KNBC this upcoming semester. The selected student will receive a $1,000 stipend from AAJA to complete the internship.

In addition to their work at the station, the chosen intern will also write a story sharing his or her experiences at the end of the internship for the AAJA-LA website and will be required to volunteer for at least two AAJA-LA events.

KNBC Channel 4:

-3 month internship -Internship can be in Investigative Unit, Sports, the Digital Channel, General Newsroom or Community Relations. -Intern duties include helping reporters, producers, executive producers, assignment desk managers and others as required. Additional duties include logging tapes, answering viewer emails, distributing scripts, newsgathering, writing and researching.

-Must be receiving school credit to qualify for internship. Must be at least junior or senior year of college. Journalism or other related majors only.

-Preferred skills: basic knowledge and understanding of TV production. Motivated and task-oriented. Other broadcast journalism experience helpful. Basic knowledge of sports (for Sports interns)

KABC Broadcast Internship

AAJA Los Angeles is again partnering with ABC 7 Eyewitness News, to select one AAJA member to intern in the winter semester. The selected students will receive a $1,000 stipend from AAJA to complete the internship.

In addition to their work at the station, the chosen intern will also write a story sharing his or her experiences at the end of the internship for the AAJA-LA website and will be required to volunteer for at least two AAJA-LA events.

Internship duration coincides with the academic semester or quarter in which student will receive college credit.

General News Internship entails observing and participating in the daily work and operations of ABC7 Eyewitness News, including the production of the daily newscasts.

Duties include attending production planning meetings, assisting the assignment desk, researching news topics, aiding in the planning of news series, viewing and logging tapes, transcribing interviews.

Intern will shadow editors, writers, producers, directors and technical crews. Intern will occasionally travel with reporters and field crews for stories and live remotes.

Anchor David Ono (AAJA-LA Board Member) will serve as the professional mentor for the AAJA intern selected.

Qualifications: Must receive college or university credit during the internship. Must supply ABC7 with written verification of eligibility for college credit. Junior or Senior class status. Course study in journalism, broadcasting or a related discipline.

Available at least one full day per week from 9:30 am-6 pm Monday – Friday.

KTLA Channel 5 Internship

A $1,000 stipend and an automatic placement as an AAJA Summer Intern at KTLA Channel 5 will be awarded to one AAJA member. This awardee will also be assigned to an AAJA mentor at the station.

To apply, you must:

-Be a current member of AAJA (Preferably the L.A. chapter)

-Be able to receive school credit (community college internship credit is acceptable) for the duration of the internship

-Be able to devote up to 20 hours a week at KTLA

-Volunteer for at least two AAJA events in the coming year

The Orange County Register Internship

The Orange County Register is looking for student members to apply for the AAJA Los Angeles internship that starts mid-September. The selected intern, who must apply to be an AAJA member, will work part-time — 150 hours — 10 weeks. The intern earns $10.63 an hour.

We’re looking for reporters, photographers, page designers, copy editors, graphics artists, and journalists with Web, multimedia and broadcast skills. Verbal fluency in a second language, especially Spanish, but also Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese is a preferred skill given the ethnic diversity among Orange County’s residents. From each pool of candidates, we’ll select the interns whose skills and experiences best match our needs.

Submit cover letters describing what you would bring to the internship and what you hope to reap from the experience. Provide unofficial college transcripts, a resume and two letters of recommendation. Reporters should provide up to 10 work samples, including multimedia.

Photographers should submit as many as 25 images and may add video and multimedia on CDs Designers and graphic artists should submit portfolios of up to 20 images on CDs. Copy editing candidates must take an editing test.
