T-Mobile USA, the US operating entity of Deutsche Telekom AG, based at US headquarters in Bellevue, WA in the greater Seattle area has awarded the search for Vice President, Corporate Communications to Judith Cushman & Associates, Bellevue, WA.

The post is the most senior communications role in the 40,000+ employee company. The VP is responsible for overseeing all facets of corporate communications, including enterprise and frontline communications, external communications/media relations, and crisis communications/issues management. The prior incumbent has relocated and the position is available immediately.

Key Challenges

The most important priorities of the position are:
–developing strategic communications programs that support marketing/branding initiatives in a highly competitive, changing landscape
–developing strategic communications that mobilize the workforce in support of company culture, values and initiatives.
–team leadership of a staff of 40+ including coaching and development, and the synergistic engagement of staff to accomplish the goals of the communications group.

About T-Mobile, USA

T-Mobile, as Deutsche Telekom’s US wireless operation, serves 33.4 million customers all via a common technology platform which is the world’s most widely used digital wireless standards. “T-Mobile’s innovative wireless products and services help empower people to connect to those who matter most.” T-Mobile was the first wireless telecom company to be named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to work for. It is currently the 4th largest wireless carrier in the industry.

Industry Overview and T-Mobile (per Robert Dotson, CEO)

The mobile industry is fast-paced and hotly competitive. Only recently, has saturation been reached as the market has matured. At this inflection point, customers are to be won at the expense of the competition. The cost of acquiring customers is rising while churn is increasing. Profit margins are eroding.

Recent developments per comments by Robert Dotson, T-Mobile’s CEO in early January as reported by The Wall Street Journal:
–Google’s Nexus One will run on T-Mobile USA and will be sold directly to consumers through a Google-run web site and T-Mobile will offer a plan for it.
–Google’s Android mobile software is vitally important to T-Mobile’s data-services strategy which best uses the newly upgraded network. (This is T-Mobile’s answer to the iPhone.)
–T-Mobile is interested in strategic alliances. While there is a benefit to telco consolidation, given the current political climate, Dotson does not expect much M&A activity.
–Key direction for T-Mobile is to focus on reducing customer turnover in this highly competitive business climate.

About the Vice President, Corporate Communications Role

The Vice President, Corporate Communications will lead all aspects of corporate communications to engage employees and safeguard and promote T-Mobile’s reputation and brand with all key stakeholders. S/He will lead a team of 40+ PR professionals and serve as the senior executive responsible for general corporate communications, media relations, social media, internal communications, industry/trade relations, issues management, crisis communications and product and service publicity. This leader also will be a key partner for DT communicators, serving as a U.S. liaison for worldwide communications campaigns as well as investor relations. The leader also will collaborate with T-Mobile Government Affairs on key legislative and regulatory initiatives.

Core Responsibilities:
General Corporate Communications. As the lead communications executive, the candidate needs to serve as a strategic counselor, a team leader as well as a communications craftsperson. The leader establishes communications policies, protocols and procedures to ensure alignment with strategic operating objectives. S/he develops new communications programs and initiatives and works cross-functionally with business leaders.
Media Relations. T-Mobile USA generates substantial media interest. This position serves as the top company PR spokesperson on critical issues — both proactively and reactively — and effectively works with international, national, state, and local print and broadcast media, as well as consumer and technology trade media. S/he also will identify the necessary external PR agency resources, and define and deploy the company’s PR agencies for optimized results within a cost-effective budget.
Internal Communications. This position will lead and manage the internal communications team’s efforts to drive cross-functional employee communications programs and engagement in support of company goals and objectives. This includes oversight of all internal communication vehicles including print, online and other multimedia tools. The leader also will work with our trade industry association to ensure T-Mobile views are fully represented in matters coming before and being driven by CTIA. The candidate may also potentially serve on the CTIA Foundation Board.

Issues Management. This position works with other corporate leaders in identifying and managing communications on critical emerging business or customer issues, as well as special projects or initiatives. This includes areas that may emerge such as employment policies and practices, customer service issues, product recalls, data integrity as well as health and safety issues, among many others.
Product and Services PR. This position manages the media relations team to lead the public announcement and launch of new products and services, working cross-functionally across units to leverage earned media in promotion and buzz surrounding new products and services tied to the T-Mobile brand position. This includes a regular review program, and developing and maintaining relationships with the top consumer tech reporters at the national, state and local level in major markets. As well, this position oversees the Go-To-Market team to ensure internal alignment on all product releases and promotions.
DT and Investor Relations. This position is the principal liaison with DT and T-Mobile International corporate communications. S/he provides support to the CFO and closely coordinates on all financial and investor issues, particularly the timing, content and U.S. elements of DT’s quarterly earnings, as well as other issues of potential impact to DT or announcements by DT with impact on U.S. communications.
Legislative and Regulatory Communications. Working with T- Mobile. Government Affairs office, this position ensures effective utilization of public affairs resources to support T-Mobile’s most critical legislative and regulatory priorities and challenges.

Crisis Communications. This position works closely with the Chief People Officer, the General Counsel and others in corporate leadership and legal in planning for and responding to crises of varying scope and severity to ensure business continuity.

Personal Characteristics/Qualifications
This is a strategic leadership position where a track record of innovative thinking supporting the business goals of the client (either on the corporate or agency side) is critical. Linked to the conceptual skills is the ability to orchestrate and implement programs through team efforts using staff and outside resources. Scale and scope is important and should be in line with the size of T-Mobile. Maturity and lack of ego are critical. Knowing how to be an effective advocate for communications based on sound business thinking, when to graciously concede and support the leadership decision is vital. Candidates at the Senior Director level (and above) in Fortune 500 companies or Vice Presidents at smaller organizations and Senior Vice Presidents at consulting firms would have the qualifications to be considered for this role.
The ideal candidate will bring added value if s/he has had experience in a company that operated in a highly competitive consumer (or consumer/tech) facing product category. Attracting and retaining customers where a wide array of branding and positioning tools were deployed would be very useful. While T-Mobile is continuously innovating, the issue of customer loyalty and retention is much broader than touting product features (which is why a consumer orientation can be far more applicable than a B to B approach.)
The challenge of a fast-paced industry segment requires a candidate that is continuously embracing change and enjoys being on the leading edge where absorbing new information is ongoing. In an industry that shifts quarter to quarter, the incumbent must welcome intensity rather than be exhausted by it. For the successful incumbent, the competitive race is “fun.”
Specific Requirements:
The candidate will have created or been principally responsible for enhancing a distinctive and widely recognized employer/brand identity through the creative and cost-effective use of media relations and other tools to gain visibility for the business in both consumer segment media and influential business press.
· Proven communications leadership, team management, and coaching/mentoring competencies are required at an organization of a comparable scale and scope
· The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 10 years, preferably 15, of communications experience with 3-5 years leading the function and responsible for multi-functional areas and directly reporting to a C-level executive at the corporation. The candidate also should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high growth environment.
College degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related discipline. Communications or related master’s degree, or MBA, preferred but not required.
Diversity, Relocation, Compensation
T-Mobile supports a diverse work environment and encourages all qualified candidates to apply
A relocation program is available if needed (Home purchase is not included.)
Compensation is extremely attractive and consists of base salary, Bonus (distributed twice yearly) and a Phantom Stock Plan Program with annual payouts.
