Sports Programmer, Yahoo! Front Page Description:
We’re looking for a sharp, creative producer to help sustain the intelligence, relevance and excitement of Yahoo!’s front page. You will be joining the editorial team behind our successful Featured module at the top center of the page, programming content packages for the largest audience on the Web. The ideal candidate will have a feel for what works on the Web, a thorough grasp of the competitive landscape, strong news judgment and an awareness of what’s buzzing in the blogosphere. We are looking for someone with a deep knowledge and passion for sports, who also knows how to engage a mass audience. You should be flexible, quick-thinking, energetic, efficient, and able to work independently under pressure while maintaining attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal skills are a must, as this position requires interacting with fellow editors and employees throughout Yahoo! This is not a feature-writing or reporting job.
Responsibilities:*Updating Yahoo!’s front page with fresh, compelling, and relevant content*Making great choices, crafting clever headlines and tease copy, choosing and cropping appropriate images *Understanding the Yahoo! audience and its interests *Pitching ideas for blog posts and articles on the most buzzed-about topics*Weekly budgeting and advance planning for news events *Proactively programming and packaging material from throughout the Yahoo! Network *Managing competing priorities, fielding pitches from diverse sources, budgeting time
Requirements: *A solid grounding in the basic principles of packaging, editing, and writing for the Web and a minimum of five years experience working in a dynamic online editorial environment *Demonstrable headline writing, image selection, and content packaging skills *A thorough understanding of editorial best practices and priorities, and an authoritative grasp of the AP Stylebook and Chicago Manual of Style *Ability to work quickly and remain cool when responding to breaking news or deadline pressure *Candidates with sports journalism and portal experience are preferred. *Basic HTML skills, Photoshop skills, and experience with online publishing tools*B.A. required, preferably in journalism or media
